A blowout is one of the top performed hair services in salons around the globe. And for me, it’s my zen zone. That’s why in Hairadise, we don’t rush into styling, we prepare ourselves for it.
Good blowouts, much like good hair days, are more about the energy you set into your strands. And the Hair Huna teaches us that before heat even touches the hair, the nervous system should be calm. With the deepening of your breath, you allow your hands to become more intentional.
So if you can’t make it to the salon for whatever reason is, let me show you how to recreate this ritual in the comfort of your ow home. Because the difference between frizz and flow is rarely due to the tool you use, but the energy behind it.

How To Blowout Hair (The Hair Huna Way)

In our island world, heat comes from the Hot Springs- a place of transformation. It’s not something to fear, but rather it requires our respect. Without awareness heat disintegrates. But with intention, it can seal, smooth, and elevate any look.
Step #1: Cleanse & Prep the Strands
The foundation to a great blowout starts in the shower. And yes, I’m referring to the way you wash your hair.
Begin by cleansing your scalp with either a clarifying shampoo or a natural clarifying agent. Release any buildup or excess oils from the scalp. Follow with a secondary shampoo if your strands tell you to.
This step is important for a proper foundation, allowing the blowout to:
- last longer
- have more movement
- feel lighter
Follow with a conditioner or hair mask of your choice, focusing on the mid shafts to ends. Rinse thoroughly.

Step #2: Slow It Down

Once you step out of the shower, remind yourself this isn’t a race. Take a breath and let your hair tell you what it needs.
Avoid aggressively brushing or detangling your hair. Blot excess water with a microfiber towel, or a cotton t-shirt.
Too much friction or rubbing will rough up the cuticles. And this will cause breakage and increase frizz in your blowout. If you don’t have a microfiber or soft cotton towel, a cotton T-shirt will do just fine.
Use either a wide toothed comb or wet brush to detangle, reducing shedding or hair loss. Start at the ends of your hair and detangle upwards towards the roots.
Step #3: Protect Your Strands
Before you put heat anywhere near those strands, apply a heat protectant. It’s a non-negotiable when it comes to the integrity of your strands.
Yeah, your strands may give off warrior energy. But even the toughest of warriors need their shield.
Apply evenly, focusing on mid-lengths to ends. For fine to medium strands, we prefer a mist or spray. For coarser strands? Try a cream based protectant.

Step #4: Don’t Forget The Rough Dry
You likely don’t want to be in front of your mirror trying to blowout your hair for hours on end. That’s what makes this step such a time and energy saver. This part is meant to get rid of the excess moisture.
Keep the airflow of your blowdryer moving, avoiding concentrating heat in one are for too long (especially the ends).
Rough drying doesn’t look the same for everyone- so here’s our general rule of thumb to follow:
- Dry straight/wavy hair around 80%
- Dry wavy/loose curls around 50%
- Dry very curly/ coils around 30%
You don’t want to over dry during this portion. Loss of too much moisture will create a frizzy end result. If I have enough time, I will let my curls air dry for a bit before doing the final blowout.
Step#5: Section with Intention

Having cleanly divided hair sections are the key to efficient and consistent results. Why does this matter?
- prevent the dreaded tangled hair stuck in a round brush
- create consistent results in each section
- prevent overheating and damge
- allow for smoother results
For reference, the height of your sections should be about equal to the circumference of your brush.
Depending on your hair density, start by sectioning off your hair in about 5-6 parts. From your crown to your nape, you should have two-three horizontal sections. And from your crown to your front hair line, you’ll have three- one down the center (stylists call this the mohawk) and one on either side. Use either alligator clips or duck bill clips to keep each section secured.
Step #6: The Blowout Hair Ritual
Now we enter the part where the visible transformation occurs. You’re obviously going to need a round brush and a blow dryer.
Here’s how to work with each section:
- Use low heat, high speed
- Guide sections out or up for volume
- Maintain tension to smooth waves, but don’t exert force
- Airflow should always be pointed downward for a smooth cuticle
It can add stress on your shoulders, arms, and wrists if you’re not used to holding these tools. Which is why I use Revlon’s One Step Volumizer; easy to use, less hassle, and offers smooth, salon-style results with its dual heating and cooling settings.

Step# 7: Cool, Set & Seal
When each section is completely dry, let it cool (often 5-15 minutes). While this step is often skipped, it might be the most crucial. Hot hair is moldable and wants to take shape of whatever you do to it. Cool hair helps the style hold. Finish with a serum to seal the ritual.
Step #8: Perfect Your Blowout
Now that you’ve done the brunt of all the legwork, your blowout should have body, movement, and shine. Notice how your strands carry a different energy when done the Hair Huna way?
At this point I like to add a few curls with a wand or flat iron because I get a little bit longer out of the style.
And that’s our secret. The final result is more than a basic blowout. Your strands notice that. I’d love to know your experience and if you add anything else to your blowout process!
If this is your first time stepping into Hairadise, and our blowout hair ritual resonated with you, this is only the beginning of the journey.
Each of your strands holds a story. And each ritual reveals a new layer.
