How have the winter blues been treating you? This season can put a lot of stress on your hair. Personally, January and February are some of my toughest months to move through—especially living in the Pocono Mountains.
The holidays are officially over, and spring feels like it’s nowhere in sight. I’ve noticed that the heavy energy that comes with long nights and short days can settle into the hair and body… and stay there until it’s released.
That’s when I decided to tap into the spirit of The Hair Huna for guidance.
She whispered: hot oil hair treatments.

What is The Hair Huna?
If you’re new here, let me introduce you.
The Hair Huna is an ancient, secret energy that lives on the mythological island of Hairadise. While it isn’t a physical destination, it is a state of mind—one that honors reconnection with your hair energy through culture, community, and wisdom.
The Hair Huna reminds us that the darker months are meant for turning inward… inviting warmth and nourishment… preserving and restoring energy.
And if that resonates in your soul, let’s talk about why hot oil hair treatments are the perfect winter Hairadise ritual.
Winter Is Tough on Hair
First things first: winter can stress your strands. As temperatures drop, we spend more time indoors—and our heating systems dry out the air in our living spaces. That dryness can show up quickly in the form of parched hair and a tight scalp.
And when we venture outside? We’re layering up.
Hats, scarves, thicker fabrics, and chunky knits create friction, which can lead to more shedding, breakage, and tangling.
Even the reduced sunlight can play a role. Shorter days may disrupt the body’s internal clock, and the National Institutes of Health has noted that this disruption can be a trigger for seasonal affective disorder (SAD). When mood-supporting chemicals like serotonin and melatonin shift, stress hormones like cortisol can rise.
And sometimes we forget to slow down. We rush through our routines, handling our strands quickly instead of gently—when they actually need softness the most.
The Stress Connection: Cortisol & Hair Habits
You’ve probably heard of cortisol. It’s your body’s main stress hormone.
In winter, stress can rise naturally due to shorter days, less sunlight, and seasonal shifts. That energy can show up at the scalp as tension, dryness, irritation, or even changes in your habits—more pulling, more rushing, less patience with detangling.
In Hairadise, we create winter rituals not just for beauty… but for nervous system support and deeper care.
Step Into Your Winter Ritual: The Hot Oil Hair Treatment
My goal is to offer you a sacred hair ritual that’s easy to do at home and built on three key factors:
warmth, moisture, and calming energy.
But first, let’s do a quick overview of what a hot oil treatment actually is.
What Is a Hot Oil Hair Treatment?
I’ve been doing DIY hot oil treatments for almost two decades. They’re simple, effective, and especially supportive during dry, cold seasons.
A hot oil treatment is when you gently warm a carrier oil of your choice and apply it to your hair (and scalp too, if you’d like). The warmth helps the oil glide through your strands more easily, and it can support deeper softness, moisture, and strength—especially when your hair feels dry, brittle, or stressed.
Perfect for winter, right?
Hot oil treatments can also be a beautiful option for scalps that feel dry or tight. You can add essential oils like lavender or frankincense to calm your crown energy—but if you deal with scalp conditions like psoriasis or eczema, it’s always best to check with your physician first to avoid flare-ups.
What are the benefits?
You can expect support like:
- Softening dry, brittle strands
- Reducing breakage
- Supporting elasticity
- Smoothing frizz and rough texture
- Improving manageability
- Protecting ends for length retention
And let’s not forget your energy. The warmth of the oil, combined with gentle touch and intentional application, signals safety to the body—and that alone can help soften stress.
Hairadise Wisdom Infused Into the Ritual

In Hairadise, winter is also a season of gathering wisdom.
We reconnect with our roots not only through hair rituals, but through reading, learning, and remembering what nourishes us.
Did you know reading—especially during the darker months—can support calmness, reflection, and community knowledge? That’s one of my favorite parts of Hairadise culture, cultivated by the spirit of The Hair Huna herself.
How to Do a Hot Oil Hair Treatment

This ritual is simple, and it doesn’t need to be perfect. It just needs to be yours.
- Choose your carrier oil.
- Warm the oil. (I prefer a double boiler, but a microwave works too.)
- Detangle your strands for easier application.
- Once the oil is warm (not hot), you can add a few drops of essential oil if desired.
- Apply to your ends first, then mid-lengths, then roots (optional).
- Massage your scalp for at least 2 minutes to stimulate circulation and release tension.
- Cover your hair to keep the heat in. Let it sit for 15–30 minutes, or even a couple of hours.
- Read a chapter of a book you love.
- Cleanse thoroughly (see: How to Wash Your Hair the Right Way ) and condition.
After you complete the ritual, you can style as usual… or weave your newfound wisdom into two braids for protection.
A Hair Guide Recommendation
For my curls, I love using a mix of coconut oil and sweet almond oil. Then I add a few drops of lavender, frankincense, and vanilla essential oils to soothe my energy and calm my nervous system.
Sweet almond oil is fairly lightweight, softens the cuticle, and rinses out easily for me.
Coconut oil can be a little heavy depending on your hair type, and it needs to be washed out thoroughly—otherwise it can leave the strands feeling even drier. (Also, coconut oil solidifies below 70°F, so keep that in mind if your home runs cool. It can be slightly harder to work with.)

I let my oil treatment marinate for at least an hour. That gives me time to read a few chapters too. Right now, I’m reading The Warmth of Other Suns—a fitting title for this cold season, and one that carries powerful cultural wisdom as well.
Your hair doesn’t need perfection, it needs presence. And winter is the season that invites you to return to your ritual, your roots, and your restoration. Hot oil hair treatments are one of the simplest ways to support your strands through dryness, stress, and seasonal shifts, while also giving your nervous system a moment of calm.
