We know that hair is more than just physical strands. It’s an energetic extension of our well being. And knowing that, we can theorize that mental health is a solid influence of hair health, whether you are experiencing stress related shedding, scalp inflammation, going through a bit of a mental health crisis or looking for hair rituals that nurture both scalp and spirit. Regardless, we’re here to guide you towards finding your Hairadise, a place of inner peace, balance, beauty and ritual. Let’s get started by unveiling the hidden link between mental health and mane!

How Mental Health Shapes the Hair Wellness Journey Header

The Science Behind Stress and Shedding

Did you know that 77% of Americans experience stress that impacts their physical health, and 48% experience stress that impacts their mental health (American Institute of Stress)? Stress is the common risk factor of 75%-90% of diseases, according to the National Institute of Health.

When the brain perceives stress, it releases the “stress hormone” known as cortisol. And elevated cortisol levels disrupt the natural hair growth cycle, triggering follicles into a prolonged resting phase, telogen effluvium- aka hair loss. Check out this study from Harvard’s Stem Cell Institute.

This stress not only slows down hair follicle regeneration, but it creates a block in the flow of our hair energy, too. On a spiritual level, this might look like a loss in energy, disconnection, or burn out. Reflect on a season of your life where you may have been going through something challenging. Did your hair feel noticeably different? Perhaps it was weaker, less manageable or not as dense.

When I was laid off back in 2022 and 2023, my mental health deteriorated and my hair showed it. It became noticeably thinner and I began developing a bald patch on the right side of my scalp, also known as alopecia areata..

So, while shedding is a natural part of our hair growth cycle, it should also be seen as a symbol of renewal and a time to reflect upon what’s going on within.

Mental Health & The Mind-Scalp Connection

The scalp is seen as your energetic crown, where intuition and vitality meet. It is also home to the crown chakra in Ayurvedic beliefs. And when mental clutter builds up, it can block the energetic field of the scalp.

Scientifically speaking, chronic stress increases inflammation, restricts blood flow and can exacerbate scalp conditions like dandruff, psoriasis, or seborrheic dermatitis. When experiencing anxiety, facial and scalp muscles tighten, thus reducing nutrient delivery to your hair follicles.

This is why it’s important to introduce physical and energetic hair cleansing rituals like hair detoxes, scalp exfoliations, sacred hair cuts or ritual brushing. Mindfulness, breathwork, and scalp massages are excellent ways to release stress buildup.

7 Mental Health Care Rituals for Healthy Hair

Mental Health Hair Care Rituals

Stored emotions or a mental health crisis can reconstruct your hair energy in many ways. Here’s common ones I’ve noticed throughout my experience in the hair world:

Depression & Low Energy might slow follicle activity, leaving hair dull and lackluster due to hormonal imbalances or reduced self care.

Anxiety can cause compulsive behaviors like hair pulling, trichotillomania, or scalp picking.

Emotional burnout might show up as brittle or fragile strands.

On the contrary, when your emotions are in check, your hair can regain strength and vitality. Isn’t that proof enough that your mane mirrors your emotional landscape?

Check out some highly recommended ritual practices that can bring peace to your mind and mane. Introduce daily or weekly for best results:

  1. Journaling before shower rituals to “release thoughts” like shedding strands.
  2. Herbal teas that calm the nervous system and nourish hair from within.
  3. A tropical-inspired scalp massage ritual with oils infused with lavender, rosemary, or hibiscus.
  4. Cold rinse therapy closes the hair cuticle but also helps to regulate nervous system responses
  5. Breathwork reduces cortisol, boosts oxygen flow to the scalp, and keeps you grounded if you’re feeling like you’re about to spiral emotionally out of control.
  6. Reiki-Infused Touch or energy cleansing to clear stagnant energy and bring awareness back into the crown chakra
  7. Mindful Nutrition and a healthy hair diet incorporate omega 3’s, b vitamins, and zinc to help regulate mood and follicle health

Transforming Shedding into a Symbol of Growth

Remember, hair shedding can typically last between 3-6 months after a major stress season in your life. That just goes to show that healing takes time. And it is often a form of release.

Don’t fight this cycle, honor it. Use mental wellness tools like therapy, meditation, and breathwork to reduce any fear surrounding hair fall. Have faith that new growth will follow, and start your journey towards Hairadise.
