I first discovered the principles of Hawaiian Huna about a year ago. Honestly, it’s amazing how much it has resonated with the lifestyle I have been trying to create. For as long as I can remember, island living has always been a dream of mine. From the incredible scenery to vibrant communities filled with rich history.
Island life, to me, is a reminder that it’s okay to disconnect. The mainland creates a bunch of noise. Between the hustle and grind, society’s ever evolving standards, and the chaos of the world.
When you unplug, you can tune into your surroundings better. You become aware of the people that surround you, engage more in conversations, quiet your mind, and find your tribe.
So with all of these benefits, I guess you can say that propelled me to follow a more spiritual path. And though many have made it into a seemingly complicated approach, I’ve found the Hawaiian Huna Principles communicate my purpose simply. So much that I’ve even intertwined these values into my hair wellness journey.
Hence The Hair Huna…
Ready to attract more positive energy into your space? These principles pave the path of a new mindset. Follow the way of the Hawaiian Huna lifestyle and get connected with the world around you.
What is Hawaiian Huna?
Huna is actually Hawaiian for “secret”. And it refers mostly to the ancient wisdom of many Polynesian cultures. This philosophy focuses on healing, positive spiritual energy, and being accountable for your own personal power.
While Huna is considered to be a New Age spiritual system invented by Max Freedom Long, it’s not recognized as an authentic Hawaiian practice.
Huna is a modern/ western name given to these ancient and secret practices. The name was coined from the term kahuna, meaning wise man or shaman.
It is said that the seven principles of Hawaiian Huna are infused with a variety of religions and esoteric beliefs from across the globe!
The 7 Principles of Hawaiian Huna
Below you can explore the seven principles of the huna philosophy. Even though these are not considered accurately translated from the Hawaiian language, the interpretations still hold meaning if you’re looking to get more connected with the world around you.
IKE
“The world is what you think it is”.
Your experience in the world often times has more to do with your perspective. And this has a lot to do with the environment you were brought up in. Luckily, you can change your outlook by engaging in new activities that ignite your inner passions.
In life, you are going to go through things that don’t always feel fair, right or just. Keeping a positive mindset can drastically change outcomes of many situations.
KALA
“There are no limits, everything is possible”.
Often times it’s easy to feel like everything you do has already been programmed.
The truth is, you are meant to evolve. Don’t get stuck in the same place forever.
But life is what you make it. Endless possibilities can be created in this world. It’s just up to you to figure that out. Don’t let your surroundings keep you in a metaphorical cage.
MAKIA
“Energy flows where attention goes”.
Your energy is your currency. And you can and should spend it how you see fit.
If you spend all your time focused on distractions and other bull shite, that’s the type of energy you’re inviting into your life.
If you want growth and evolution, even spending fifteen minutes a day towards your goals can launch you miles ahead of where you would’ve been.
MANAWA
“Now is the moment of power”.
You’re doing yourself a major disservice by putting your goals on the back burner.
I’ll do it tomorrow has been a favorite phrase of mine. But tomorrow always came and went. And life usually managed to get in the way.
So I decided to (try my best to) honor the present moment. This helps if you struggle with anxiety, too. Too much future thinking is not good.
Do it now before it’s too late. The present is guaranteed. But tomorrow is not promised.
ALOHA
“To love is to be happy”.
The power of love has proven to be transformational. In plants, nature, in people and the world.
Operating at a higher frequency can change the trajectory of your day, your attitude, and has a domino effect on those you encounter.
You may not be in the position you want, have the pink Jeep or a walk-in closet filled with a boutique display of purses and shoes ( is that too specific? 😂). But being happy and grateful for what you have is a state of peace no one can take from you.
MANA
“Power comes from within”.
A concept seen in several other cultures around the world. You might be more familiar with the terms Qi, Chi, Ki or Prana. This life force comes from internal strength. This is not found from external sources.
You are powerful, but you have to find it within yourself and own it.
PONO
“Effectiveness is the measure of truth”.
Even if others don’t believe in what you’re putting out into the universe, the success of your creation speaks for itself. If it produces the results that you intended, then it must be true.
Some things in life will work for you and not for others. And vice versa. Two things can be true at the same time.
Understanding these principles can help redirect your mindset while focusing on more important things in life than hustle and bustle. And on a personal note, I do believe there is truth in this. In general, this is a great foundation to any community. Even if it’s not recognized as a part of the ancient hawaiian culture.
So let’s end this on a lighter note. Your spiritual energy is what helps you connect with the community around you. If you’ve been feeling stuck, disconnected or discouraged from your purpose, these Hawaiian Huna principles can guide you towards a different path.
Now, go forth and be great. The world needs your good energy.
