Hey, you! Thanks for tagging along on today’s excursion. We’ll be exploring some of the best and most common natural hair remedies on the island. But before we get into that, let’s do a quick hair care refresher.
The Origin of Hair Care
So believe it or not, the first modern hair shampoo wasn’t created until 1927, by Hans Schwarzkopf. But hair care itself has held roots since ancient Egyptian times- and possibly earlier than that. Historically, people were known to use oils, herbs and plants as a way of caring for their locks. That is until we had easy access to commercial goods in salons, beauty supply stores, and other retailers.
Caring for your hair was often associated as a symbol of status, linking you to certain social classes based on characteristics like style, color, and condition.
Hair also holds significance in religious, marital or cultural aspects, health and hygiene, warrior protection, and now, aesthetics and fashion.
Embracing Our Roots With Natural Hair Remedies
Did you know that natural hair remedies can improve your hair wellness journey in more ways than one?
While your soul craves connection, your hair wants antioxidants for proper nourishment. Both seek protection from free radicals found in the environment, in chemicals, and in many commercialized hair products.
As you shift into higher timelines and new paradigms, you will be called to embrace your roots and realign with nature.
Nature is a powerful way to explore the interconnectedness of the universe and feel apart of something bigger than your own inner world. Take the leap of faith and trust in the natural cycle of the universe. You will invite openness, connection, stability, and growth into your life and into your hair.
Are You Ready To Receive?
It’s time to include natural hair remedies into your hair rituals. Both your hair and Mother Earth will thank you.
Why?
Because you will no longer project harmful chemicals onto either of them. This means healthier hair and scalp. Ingredients like sulphates and alcohols strip your scalp of its natural oils. This causes irritation, while parabens and pthalates have been linked to bad hormone health.
You lead a more sustainable lifestyle. So, instead of contributing to the problem, you’re investing in the solution. And to be honest, you’re investing in you and your crown.
Below are some of my personal favorite natural hair remedies. You may want to brush up on how to use herbs for hair. Don’t forget to debunk any herbal hair care myths to set up your hair wellness journey for success.
Let’s rock & scroll!
Natural Hair Remedies
Use Rosemary For Growth
Rosemary is one of the most valuable natural hair care remedies. Originally, she was among the first to be used medicinally. Rosemary is considered to be just as effective as minoxidil, an active ingredient in many consumer hair growth products.
When it comes to your hair and scalp, here are the main benefits of rosemary:
- aids in hair growth
- stimulating circulation and improving blood flow
- provides relief to dry, itchy scalp
- adds shine and gloss to the hair cuticle
Spiritually, rosemary has been used for protecting your energy and intuition. It’s able to stimulate focus, improve memory and increase attentiveness. Rosemary is a multi-purpose herb filled with a whole bunch of goodness that you and your soul need. Elevate your wash days by adding her into your hair rituals (essential oils, anyone?).
Lavender For Anxiety Relief
Stress and anxiety are one of the leading factors when it comes to hair loss. However, each hair story is different.
Lavender is used in aromatherapy to help soothe the senses, promoting a relaxing and tranquil environment. Additionally she holds anti-inflammatory properties to nurture dry scalp, irritation, inflammation and specific kinds of dandruff.
When it comes to hair wellness, stress and anxiety is known to trigger telogen effluvium. This puts hair follicles into what’s known as the “resting phase”. You might notice more hair coming out as you’re combing through it.
Use lavender for both internal and external wellness. Calm the body’s fight or flight response to stress while strengthening your hair follicles to promote growth.
Tea Tree To Cleanse
Tea tree is commonly recognized by its medicinal scent, which doesn’t necessarily resonate with everyone. But because of this, it’s important to dilute tea tree with a carrier oil that’s right for your hair texture.
Tea Tree is anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and antimicrobial. It helps to relieve any scalp conditions like dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, oily scalp and much more.
Hibiscus for Nourishment
Hibiscus offers plenty of hair and scalp benefits like follicle stimulation, clearing scalp buildup and preventing scalp infections. More commonly used in tropical regions for hair care, it also helps with reducing hair fall, and preventing premature graying. She’ll even protect your locks from sun damage and harsh UV rays.
Hibiscus is a beach bum’s dream hair ingredient!
Don’t Go Bananas
Bananas are rich in potassium, natural oils, and vitamins like magnesium and vitamin C.
They noticeably improve hair elasticity and prevent breakage for fuller and voluminous hair in as little as one use. So don’t throw away those overripe bananas just yet! Try a banana mask and let your tresses reap the moisturizing benefits.
Apple Cider Vinegar For Balance
If your locks are looking lackluster, ACV will replenish shine by rebalancing your hair and scalps natural pH (between 4.5 -5.5). Apple cider vinegar is great for all hair types (yes, curly heads, you too). ACV locks in color and shine, softens hair, removes buildup and keeps any scalp issues at bay.
If you suffer from high porosity hair, then your hair has a hard time holding on to moisture. Apple cider vinegar is one of the necessary natural hair remedies to help your cuticles retain moisture. Clients who receive frequent chemical services (lightening, relaxers, and some dyes are usually alkaline) run the risk of more porous hair.
Cool Down With Aloe Vera
Aloe vera is soothing and hydrating for the scalp and hair. Her gel-like substance has healing properties and she’s most commonly known for her cooling effects on sunburnt skin.
Aloe reduces scalp irritation, dandruff, and promote hair growth. She offers a deep clean without stripping the hair’s integrity.
Filled with vitamin B12, A, C, E, and folic acid, aloe reduces hair fall, conditions and improves damaged, dry hair and helps with cell regeneration.
Support Moisture with Avocado
Avocado is an excellent source of healthy fats and vitamins that can help nourish and strengthen hair. Avocado supports your hair in multiple ways. You can eat it, make it into a mask, or use it as a hair oil.
Filled with vitamins, amino acids, plus both poly and monounsaturated fats, your hair wellness journey is fully supported. Reap the benefits of strong, thick, voluminous and ultra moisturized tresses.
Vitamin E helps to unclog hair follicles. Your scalp the best environment to grow hair while sealing all of the goodness inside the hair cuticle.
Coconut Oil To Condition
Coconut oil is one of the ultimate natural hair remedies in tropical regions. Despite more recent claims, it offers many hair benefits..
Filled with vitamins and fatty acids, this natural conditioner moisturizes hair, reduces protein loss, and can help prevent damage. Coconut oil promotes hair growth, reduce dandruff and calm frizz. Want to add hair oiling to your hair wellness journey? This carrier oil is perfect for medium to coarse hair textures.
Rice Water For Strength
If your locks are dull and weak, consider trying a rice water rinse between one to two times per week. This should not be part of your daily routine! Too much protein can have adverse effects on your strands, like lack of definition or brittleness.
After a few rice water rinses, you should see an improvement of hair elasticity, volume, wave and curl definition. If you experience protein overload, good news; you can reverse the effects with a moisture mask. Try a deep conditioner with natural hair remedies such as avocado or honey.
Reduce Split Ends With Moringa Oil
Moringa is a natural hair remedy that is abundant in tropical areas. Rich in nutrients like vitamins A, C, and E, you’ll promote hair growth, strengthen hair, and reduce split ends.
Honey Holds Moisture
Honey is a natural humectant. This means it can help retain moisture in the hair. It also has antibacterial properties which improve scalp health. Shine, smoothness, and moisture packed hair are just a few sweet benefits!
Mango Butter To Combat Frizz
Mango butter comes from mango seeds. Rich in vitamins A and E, it’s a great natural moisturizer. It can be used to seal in moisture for dry and frizzy hair. Plus- it’s non-comedogenic. This means it won’t clog your pores like some other oil-based natural hair remedies.
Mango butter is a super versatile ingredient that works great on all hair types.
Natural hair remedies are an important part of healthy hair and the hair wellness journey. It’s truly a no brainer. Embracing your roots and reconnecting with nature will nourish both your strands and your soul. You can even plant these natural hair remedies in a beauty garden to support your root chakra balancing.
