Alright y’all, let’s tell the buttery blondes and cowboy coppers to exit stage left. Honey blonde hair has entered the chat and she’s turning heads this fall season.
Whether you’re starting off with light or dark hair, I’m here to share some stylist insight on why this is the perfect shade for the season’s changes.
What Exactly is Honey Blonde?
Well it’s your new fall hair color, duh!
But seriously, it resembles the rich and natural color of honey. And believe it or not, raw honey actually comes in a range of shades from amber to a light gold. Just like the fall leaves.
You can have bright pieces that bring warmth, with a golden, sun-kissed aura, infused with darker pieces of depth and dimension.
Sounds like a sweet deal, right?
Why This Is Your Sweetest Fall Color
It’s Perfect For Just About Anyone
Let me tell you, one of my fav things about this honey blonde trend is that it works for just about anyone- no matter your starting hair color or your skin tone. We see this on celebs like J. Lo, Beyonce, Lauren Conrad, Gigi Hadid and many more (like in this post from Byrdie).
It helps to enhance your natural undertones. And because honey isn’t all one shade, you (but more likely your fab stylist) can customize it to suit you.
Honey Blonde Is The Perfect Transition Shade
Looking to add some depth to your blonde tresses for the colder months? Try honey blonde.
Aiming to be a brighter blonde come next spring? Well, honey blonde is a sweet way to go lighter without being too aggressive on your tresses. In fact, it is a good blonde destination to preserve your hairs’ health and integrity.
It’s Customizable
With this look, you and your stylist should communicate in regard to how often you’re looking to be back in the salon to get it refreshed.
I love dimension when it comes to hair color. Not only can it provide a lived in look, but low maintenance is key in this hairadise.
If you’re thinking about hopping on the honey blonde bandwagon, here are some popular techniques your stylist can use to get you there:
- Global Color
- Balayage
- Highlights/ Lowlights
If these terms are new to you, you can read more about them in my Balayage Vs. Highlights post.
It’s Not Hard To Maintain, Either
Because of its underlying warm tones, your hair may not require as many touch ups. But this is more true if you are aiming for a more lived in look. But it’s also important to take note that your at-home hair maintenance is super important.
I have naturally dark hair, with honey blonde highlights. I can get away with re-toning my hair about every 3-4 months. This also helps to keep my curls in tact.

The Best Way To Maintain Your Honey Blonde Hair
Quality products and a proper cut will improve your hairs integrity, allowing your color to last longer. This will also ensure the health for any future chemical or color hair services.
Stylist Recommendations:
- Add A Cut To Your Salon Service. Any time you have a chemical service done to your hair, you should trim off the ends, at the very least. This will keep your hair in good shape and prevent any damage from working its way up the hair shaft.
- Use a blue or purple based shampoo. This will prevent your honey blonde from fading into a brassy hue. You only need to use this type of shampoo once every week or two depending on how often you normally wash your hair, as it can be slightly drying. Double check with your stylist to see whether they recommend a blue or purple shampoo.
- Don’t Forget sulfate-free shampoo & conditioner. Sulfates are known to strip the natural oils in your hair- which you need to keep as much moisture in your strands. Currently I’m using a a bond repair shampoo followed by a moisture rich conditioner. It’s the best of both worlds.
- Find the best hair mask. A hair mask will go deeper into the core of your hair shaft, repairing any damage from the inside out. Moisturizing masks are best if your hair feels dry, while protein masks are better from weak strands that break often. Discover more, here.
- Leave in conditioner. This protects the mid shaft of your hair from external pollutants, locks in moisture, and helps to preserve length. You can read more about it here.
- Heat protectant. This is a must if you’re using any type of hot tool on your hair OR if you spend lots of time in the sun. Read more about them here.
