We’ve all experienced frizzy hair at one point or another in our lifetime. And sometimes it adds some character to our look.

But then there’s the times when we’re looking for a super sleek, or defined, frizz-free style. For that reason, we’re breaking it down with the science of frizz, common causes, and remedies, for those dreaded, uncooperative, frizzy hair days.

The Science Behind Frizzy Hair

Having frizzy hair is actually a lot more common than you’d think. And yes, there’s actually a science to it.

Really, it’s just the result of the hair cuticle (its outer layer) being lifted. When the hair fibers lay in different directions, you’ll notice your hair appears fuzzy, and often tangles far more easily.

And this happens because of a disruption in the hydrogen bonds that make up the keratin protein structure. Because of this, the hair actively seeks moisture from the air around you, making it swell and change shape. Hence, frizzy hair.

Check out some of the root causes below.

Common Causes of Frizzy Hair

Your Environment

Ah, yes- the humidity is a big factor. Your skin probably loves it, but I guarantee it does not get the same reaction from your hair.

While we can’t control the weather, just knowing that it’s going to be a humid day can help you and your hair prepare (especially those of us on the east coast).

Friction

Being too rough on your locks is never a good thing, but more importantly when the hair is wet. You might be towel drying or detangling too harshly.

Clothing materials (like polyester) and pillowcases are common things you may not realize that cause friction against your tresses, too. As your hair comes into contact with these items, it roughs up the cuticle leading to a frizz fest.

Poor Styling Habits

It’s possible that you’re frizz could be a result of not practicing proper hair rituals. From shampoos, to products, and even styling could all end in a mess if you aren’t using the right products with the right intentions.

Harsh Ingredients

Are you using products with sulfates or alcohol? These ingredients strip the scalp of its natural oils which further prevents the cuticle from getting the moisture it craves.

Your Frizz Could Be Genetic

If you have waves or curls, your hair naturally has a higher porosity. This means that while it sucks up moisture quickly, it loses it just as fast.

Additionally, there are some medical issues linked to frizzy hair, like hormone changes, thyroid imbalance or menopause (always consult with your doctor first).

Frizzy Hair Remedies

So now that you understand what the common causes of your frizz are, here’s some ways to combat it to get the smooth and silky locks of your dreams:

1. Use Hydrating Products

Learning how to wash your hair is one thing, but your regular shampoo and conditioner might be the root cause of your frizzy locks.

Opt for something that says moisturizing or hydrating on the label (Shea butter is a deeply hydrating ingredient).

This is especially important when choosing a shampoo for curls or waves as they naturally require more moisture. And stray away from products with sulfates and alcohol.

2. Handle Your Hair With Care

POV: You’re in my chair and you tell me to just rip right through the knots… you’re used to it.

UHM, no!

Detangling is by far my least favorite hair chore. BUT that doesn’t mean I won’t handle my hair- or yours- without some extra TLC.

Leave in for frizzy hair

Use a microfiber towel to dry your hair (or a cotton T-shirt. Spray-on leave in conditioner to add some extra slip to the hair shaft. With a wide toothed comb you can start to detangle from the ends first, working your way up to the root.

And for goodness sake, sleep on a satin pillowcase or use a silk wrap.

3. Maintain A Balanced Diet

A healthy hair diet is often talked about, but usually one of the last things people change.

If your body is lacking hydration within, it reflects outwardly through your hair, and skin, too.

Fruits are a great source of hydration, along with regular water intake. Reduce your sodium and processed food intake.

4. Use A Mask For Frizzy Hair

Lightweight hair mask

Finding an ultra hydrating hair mask could unlock a new world of silky, frizz-free locks. So of course you’ve gotta try it.

Deep conditioning masks go deeper into the hair shaft to moisturize them from the inside out. Most only have to sit on the hair between 5-15 minutes. That means it’s really no extra time out of your day, just add it to your weekly wash day routine.

5. Hot Oil Treatments For Frizzy Hair

These have been my go to for about fifteen years now, and they have never failed me.

As much as I’d love to take credit though, hair oiling is an ancient ritual that’s been around for centuries.

Essential oils for frizzy hair

I use a carrier oil like coconut or argan mixed with a few drops of whichever essential oil I’m feeling that day. Massage into the scalp working it through from roots to ends. Once saturated, wrap it in a warm towel or sit under a hair dryer for at least 30 minutes. Wash thoroughly and enjoy your frizz free hair, love.

6. Protect Your Hair From The Heat

Do you like to use hot tools every now and again? That’s okay, so do I. It’s impossible to put them down completely. A girl’s gotta switch up her look, right?

Between the direct heat, the sun’s uv rays, and other environmental pollutants, you ought to invest in a heat protectant.

Bonus tip, you can find yourself a leave in conditioner that provides heat protection. It’s like two products for the price of one. Can’t beat it!

7. Keratin Treatments

Keratin treatment for frizzy hair

While this option has a higher up front cost, it’s totally worth the overall hair investment.

Keratin is the protein that makes up your hair shaft. But due to chemicals, harsh products, and regular wear & tear- among other factors, it weakens.

Treatments add moisture deep inside the hair cuticle and lock it in by rebuilding the keratin structure. This smoothes your locks (and does NOT permanently straighten- a common misbelief) lasting up to 6 months depending on how well you take care of it.

There’s even different formulas for those wishing to keep their curls in tact, but more hydrated and defined!

8. Be Mindful of Product Ingredients

It wasn’t long ago that buying products with good ingredients seemed to cost an arm and a leg.

But with the increased popularity of consumers prioritizing transparency, it’s easier than ever ( and cheaper) to get your hands on good products with quality ingredients. From brands like Acure to Surface hair products, you can now benefit from products that won’t dry your hair and are clean conscious.

Don’t get caught up in a greenwashing scam!

9. Lay Off The Chemicals

Changing your hair color can be fun! But doing so too often can risk your hairs’ integrity and fry the cuticle to the core.

This is especially true if you’ve been lightening your locks or overuse perms, relaxers, and other chemical treatments.

If you can’t quit cold turkey, I understand. But do yourself and your hair a favor. Make sure you’re seeing a trusted and licensed hairstylist, and be honest about your hair history. This gives the stylist the proper info to move forward and help you with other hair recommendations.

10. Chop Off The Dead Ends

And here we are at the final frizzy hair remedy. Yes, I know it’s not your favorite because you want to retain your length. But, not keeping up with your regular trims just causes a whole lotta hair issues.

On average, your hair grows about a half an inch per month. When you don’t cut the split and dead ends, they travel further up the hair shaft. This causes far more tangled, breakage, and keeps your hair from absorbing the proper moisture it needs.

Shoot for a trim about every 6-12 weeks. Of course the time frame differs depending on your hair characteristics.

So while you definitely can’t control the weather, or your genetics, you can certainly tame your frizzy hair. These remedies are extremely important when it comes to improving your hair wellness journey. Leave a comment below letting me know how you plan to transform your tresses from frizzy to frizz-free!
